Composter Automates Rotating Drum Operation

Composter automates rotating drum operation with the newly automated PLC Control Panel with Soft Touch Screen by XACT Systems.  The user friendly soft touch screen on the front of the control panel was designed for the BioReactor Composting System in order to give the operator easy access to a wide variety of critical data.  Data which is vital to the successful composting of solid organic waste.

Although composting is not a complicated process it is a fairly precise process in terms of balancing the few factors that impact it.  The control panel has been developed to provide more accurate monitoring of these factors to ensure the best results.  A quick reminder as to what those few factors are:  Carbon-Nitrogen ratio, moisture content, oxygen, operating temperatures, and particle size.  For a more detailed description of the parameters for successful composting, please follow this link to the XACT Composting System website page describing them.

In addition, the data collected from the monitoring can be sent to the operator’s cell phone or computer 24/7.  By making the data “portable”, the operator can be tracking the BioReactor’s operation while eating lunch!

These added features compound the benefits that the XACT BioReactor System already has.

  1. The BioReactor has the fastest decomposition time—it can compost organic waste in as little as 4 days. Compare this to traditional methods that can take upwards of a year!
  2. Odor control is also ensured by the continual rotation of the drum, which causes the organic material to tumble around inside.  This tumbling action ensures all the particles of the waste are exposed to oxygen at all times which is vital to a highly aerobic composting process and therefore an odor-free process.
  3. Pathogen and virus destruction are the foundations of our composting system. XACT In-Vessel Organics Composting follows the guidelines set down by the EPA to ensure pathogen and virus kill.
  4. Less manpower is required because the rotating vessel does all the work—one man can operate the entire process especially when the composter automates rotating drum operation.
  5. The XACT BioReactor uses a very, very low horsepower electric motor to operate.
  6. The vessel can be insulated which helps retain the high operating temperatures of 130°F+ (55°C+) required (this is the EPA standard for pathogen kill—3 days at 130°F). Because of the insulation, the XACT vessel does not need to be housed in a building, but the compost should be stored under cover.
  7. The process is natural and typically requires no added heat.
  8. Less land is required with the BioReactor rotating drum because the decomposition process occurs within the vessel, and less feedstock piles are required because material is processed so fast.
  9. Site requirements are minimal because of the compact size of the system, and because what little condensates are present are completely captured.
  10. Fantastic compost is the result because changeable weather conditions are not a consideration, and all the factors needed for great decomposition are optimized and controlled.

Composting Septic Sludge

Composting Septic Sludge Tests Prove Successful

Composting septic sludge in 5 days AND making compost that is pathogen free is possible with the BioReactor by XACT Systems Inc.   In this testing project, the septic sludge is combined with other materials in order to make a balanced recipe of organics with a C:N ratio in the ideal range (20:1 to 30:1).  This is the vital first step in composting solid organic waste quickly and making compost that is pathogen free.  The second step is to compost this proper mixture in the BioReactor which is an in vessel rotating drum composter.  The composter rotates slowly and constantly.  The rotation tumbles the waste material inside the drum and exposes all of the material to the ambient oxygen.  The aerobic bacteria which naturally reside in the organic waste will decompose it.  The fact that all the bacteria are getting all the oxygen they need to do a great job of breaking down the material means that the waste will compost quickly and with little or no odor.  The innovative features of this 5′ diameter x 10′ long BioReactor allow the temperatures of the composting process to hit temperatures of 145 degrees Fahrenheit  to 170 degrees Fahrenheit and maintain it there.  Once these high temperatures are achieved, the septic sludge is exposed to this heat for 72 hours (as per the protocol stated by the EPA standard for pathogen kill in a composting process). After 5 days, the compost is discharged and it looks and smells like dirt.  It will make an excellent soil amendment and be a valuable revenue stream for this composting operation.

When composting septic sludge at 170 degrees for 5 days, pathogen free compost is guaranteed.

Composting Septic Sludge is made easy in the BioReactor. The processing temperatures are running between 145 degrees and 170 degrees.

XACT Systems Exhibits the BioReactor: An Innovative Composter

Are You Attending the US Composting Conference in Jacksonville, FL next month?

If so, stop in at the XACT Systems booth and find out more about the innovative composter:  The BioReactor!  Learn how to successfully compost food, yard and all sorts of municipal waste (including biosolids) rapidly.

Composter will compost yard waste, food waste, biosludge, and biosolids.

BioReactor Composting System with In-feed and Discharge Conveyors, BioFilter & Future Expansion Capability.

When you compost solid organic waste using the BioReactor, you will realize economic benefits (always a good thing),  and environmental benefits.  Converting waste into quality compost allows you to capitalize on the nutrient value of the waste and sell the resulting compost.  Because traditional methods of managing these wastes are incurring high costs, are creating health hazards and odor problems in the surrounding communities, there is a need to treat these huge volumes of organic waste with technological innovation.

The BioReactor Composter

The BioReactor Composter is a slowly rotating drum that converts any solid organic waste into compost.  It complies with the fundamentals of composting* regulations by tightly controlling the parameters of the composting process. This composter makes an ideal environment for the oxygen-loving bacteria to thrive and decompose the material in a highly aerobic process. The BioReactor will compost large volumes of organic waste quickly, and will do so without the occurrence of hazardous leachates or foul doors.

Indeed, the compost bears no resemblance to the waste from which it was produced.  This compost has tremendous value if sold in bags or bulk because it makes an excellent soil amendment due to its organic matter and nutrient content. The compost no longer has harmful bacteria in it to cause disease so it can be spread on land close to water sources.

* Composting is defined as a process of biological decomposition of biodegradable organic fraction of the waste, carried out by a diverse population of organisms under controlled aerobic conditions and other parameters (ratio of carbon: nitrogen, moisture, temperature, pH, particle size, porosity, homogeneity of the mixture).

If you are planning to go to the US Composting Conference in Jacksonville January 25-28, 2016, please visit us at booth 722.  Hope to see you there!

Why Bury Money?

Why Bury Money? Why indeed!  But it is occurring everyday in every municipality on this continent.  At a time,

4 Friction Drives Rotate the BioReactor

4 Friction Drives Rotate the BioReactor

when city coffers are dry and nobody wants to raise taxes, a good source of new revenue is being sent to the landfill and being buried.  Solid organic waste when converted to good quality compost is worth $16.00 to $65.00 a cubic yard.   Imagine what the annual revenue stream could be on the thousands of tons of organics if only it were diverted.  Then imagine what could be done with the money.

I can hear the nay-sayers now…..”but the cost of setting up the composting system is prohibitive.” As the old timers used to say, hog wash!  The XACT BioReactor Composting System pencils so well because of its low operating costs, minimal manpower, land, and energy requirements.  The typical Return on Investment for a large system is 2 years or less.  Plus, it is clean system with ridiculously low odor, emissions or leachates.  The precise engineering and robust carbon steel construction of the BioReactor provides reliable 24/7 operation. Check out the website:  xactsystemscomposting.com and read about the success stories of others who have stopped burying their money (and are spending it!!!)

XACT BioReactor Turns Waste Into Revenue

No doubt, you have heard this:  Waste is not waste until you waste it!  This is so true.  If your operation is generating a solid organic waste material, don’t just get rid of it because it can be converted to a revenue generating commodity.  Don’t waste your waste….compost it with the XACT BioReactor.  No matter whether the material is food waste, biosolids, manure, or any solid organic, it can be successfully composted.  The BioReactor allows you to compost on your site using a very small footprint and do so in a fast, quiet, odor-free fashion.  The other good news is that composting with the BioReactor pencils very, very well.  By eliminating typical haulage costs, tipping fees, storage costs etc, you can realize a timely return on your investment.  If the next step is then taken–that is marketing the compost, the added revenue generated by the sales of the superior compost that the BioReactor creates goes straight to your bottom line.  Remarkably, it truly is all good, so I encourage you to investigate this opportunity.

Waste not, want not!  Many thanks.  D

Composting Facility Design Composts 2 Separate Waste StreamsUsing 4 BioReactors by XACT

Site Layout for 2 Waste Streams and 4 BioReactors.

Site Layout for 2 Waste Streams and 4 BioReactors.

A composting facility design using 4 XACT BioReactors accommodates 2 different waste streams.  In this situation, the waste streams are biosolids and mixed solid organics.  Note the building in the foreground which has a wall dividing the tipping floor which keeps the waste streams separate.  The 2 vessels on the left compost one type of waste while the 2 on the right compost the other waste stream.  In this case, the discharged compost needed to stored for a period of time so it is automatically conveyed into the building in the background for that purpose.   One of the requirements of this facility being built is this jurisdiction was that there be odor control technology included.  Therefore there are 2 biofilters: one services the waste receiving building and the other services all the drums.    If you are thinking about how to design your composting facility, please give us a call.  The design possibilities know no limits.  Thanks so much for your time and consideration.  Doreen
