The Model 515 BioReactor Composter Rotating Drum Technology

The BioReactor is a rotating drum composter that has a load capacity of 70% of the total volume of the drum. This composter is 5’ diameter x 15’ long. It features a fixed, spring-loaded in-feed end with an opening for loading; a fixed, spring-loaded output end with an automated discharge auger or door; a rotating vessel supported by 4 trunnion wheels, a Friction Drive (.75 HP motor), and a negative ventilation fan.

The Conveyor

The BCS is equipped with a heavy-duty automated incline conveyor fortified with a cleated belt. The cleated belt prevents the pre-blended organic waste from sliding back down the conveyor as it is being automatically loaded into the BioReactor.

The Control Panel

The control panel monitors the composting process and controls the function of the mixer, the conveyor and the BioReactor. This is accomplished by the Timer/PLC Control on the Control Panel. Complete control of the system is thus at the finger tips of the operator.

The BioReactor Composter

The BioReactor Composter is a slowly rotating drum that converts any solid organic waste into compost.  It complies with the fundamentals of composting* regulations by tightly controlling the parameters of the composting process. This composter makes an ideal environment for the oxygen-loving bacteria to thrive and decompose the material in a highly aerobic process. The BioReactor will compost large volumes of organic waste quickly, and will do so without the occurrence of hazardous leachates or foul doors.

Indeed, the compost bears no resemblance to the waste from which it was produced.  This compost has tremendous value if sold in bags or bulk because it makes an excellent soil amendment due to its organic matter and nutrient content. The compost no longer has harmful bacteria in it to cause disease so it can be spread on land close to water sources.

* Composting is defined as a process of biological decomposition of biodegradable organic fraction of the waste, carried out by a diverse population of organisms under controlled aerobic conditions and other parameters (ratio of carbon: nitrogen, moisture, temperature, pH, particle size, porosity, homogeneity of the mixture).

Composting multiple organic waste streams separately is no big deal.  Do so with a very small footprint and in just 6-7 days–so now there is something to talk about!   This is all  possible with the BioReactor Composting Technology by XACT Systems.

Two full size BioReactors are composting 2 waste streams at an integrated processing plant. The 3rd smaller BioReactor is processing other waste streams on a trial basis.

This installation is operating with 3 BioReactors in order to quickly compost multiple waste streams (slaughterhouse sludge, hatchery waste, wood chips).  2 of the composters are permanently situated and each is composting a different organic waste. The smaller third composter is temporarily in place to conduct trials of various other organic waste streams.   As you can see, these vessels are housed under a single roof.  The land requirement for this composting system is pretty small compared to other methods of composting which would require a large acreage to compost the same amount of waste.

How the BioReactor Composting Technology Works:

The BioReactor  is an in vessel rotating drum that provides the perfect environment for the composting process to take place which means that the composting process happens very, very fast.   Small Land Requirement:   These larger 2 units are 10′ x 60′ (3m x 18m). Heat:  The continual rotation of the BioReactor controls the temperatures of the composting process in optimal range.  Oxygen:  Plus, ALL the tumbling waste material is exposed to the oxygen in the air at all times, so decomposition process is completely aerobic.  Capacity:  The BioReactors can process large volumes of waste per day…in this case each vessel is processing 22 tons per day.

Our In-Vessel Composting System Is Being Put Through Its Paces and Performs Well

XACT’s in-vessel composting system is being put to the test in a pilot project using various solid organic materials and amendments.  One of the tests included small animal/bird mortalities as a feedstock.  Recently, one of the superb composts produced used the following feedstocks:

This project has been implemented  to confirm the BioReactor’s performance and to determine best practises for the composting process protocols  and feedstocks.  This in-vessel composting system is comprised of a 5′ diameter  x 10′ long vessel, a mixer and conveyor and is situated in a hoop building.  It has been running tests for approximately 6 months trouble free.  Satisfied with the pilot project results, this company is ready to take on the full “meal deal” and   get started commercially on a large scale with a 1060 BioReactor.

A composting facility design using 4 XACT BioReactors accommodates 2 different waste streams.  In this situation, the waste streams are biosolids and mixed solid organics.  Note the building in the foreground which has a wall dividing the tipping floor which keeps the waste streams separate.  The 2 vessels on the left compost one type of waste while the 2 on the right compost the other waste stream.  In this case, the discharged compost needed to stored for a period of time so it is automatically conveyed into the building in the background for that purpose.   One of the requirements of this facility being built is this jurisdiction was that there be odor control technology included.  Therefore there are 2 biofilters: one services the waste receiving building and the other services all the drums.    If you are thinking about how to design your composting facility, please give us a call.  The design possibilities know no limits.  Thanks so much for your time and consideration.  Doreen

In-Vessel Rotating Drum Composter Converts Food Waste to Compost

This in-vessel rotating drum composter is composting food waste, and interestingly enough, the amendment being used in horse manure.  The operators of this facility know that in order to get good quality compost out, they need to put the right blend of feedstocks in.  The constraints of the blend consists of:  1) a proper percentage of moisture and  2)  the correct proportion of Carbon to Nitrogen.  Because the food waste stream on its own did not meet these constraints, there would need to be an amendment added to the food waste.  The horse manure was available and also needed to be disposed of, so this composting facility determined the right blend of these 2 waste streams, and are now indeed, producing very good compost.  No less than a triple win!

Food Waste Composting Succeeds with the XACT Vessel
