1700 Cow Dairy Composts Dewatered Manure for Bedding

The XACT BioReactor on this dairy operation is 10’ diameter by 60’ long. It has to turn 45 to 50 tons of dewatered cow manure 240 times per day, 365 days per year.  After taking a look at the robust mechanical characteristics of the XACT BioReactor drum and the heavy duty drive system, this dairy operation was confident in the ability of the XACT system to handle the staggering weights of waste material to be processed daily. Dewatered cow manure is fed into the vessel by a conveyor. Because the infeed opening is located in the upper quadrant of the stationary infeed end, the BioReactor can be filled to 70% capacity. Remarkably, a 7.5 hp variable speed drive turns the BioReactor and its load.

After a 4-day retention period in the vessel, the discharged compost is taken back to the barn to be used as bedding for the herd. Upon discharge the compost is pathogen free, weed seed free, insect larvae free, and odorless. At this point the compost is about 50% moisture, and therefore as it gets blown into the stalls there is minimal airborne dust. Most importantly, the cows love it as it provides exceptional comfort.

Always looking to the future, Pete & Gerry’s wanted to test an idea they have for producing compost from the poultry manure.  They want to capitalize on the marketing potential of this specialized compost–possibly as an organic soil amendment.   The BioReactor is 6′ diameter by 30′ long (1.8m x 9 m) and has a total processing capacity of 22 cubic yards (16 cubic metres).

On Wednesday, January 28th, XACT Systems will make a presentation  describing 2 separate pilot projects that were conducted on poultry farms composting various types of poultry waste. One test took place in Brazil and the other in New York State. The test results proved that the BioReactor composting system will compost organic poultry waste in 7 days (or less), and will produce a light fluffy compost that is pathogen-free (including salmonella and coliforms), odor-free, weed-seed free, insect larvae-fee and mature. Indeed, the compost bears no resemblance to the waste from which it was produced.

This compost has tremendous value if sold in bags or bulk because it makes an excellent soil amendment due to its organic matter and nutrient content. Indeed, the compost no longer has harmful bacteria in it to cause disease so can be spread on land close to water sources. Because the BioReactor is situated on site, the cost of hauling poultry waste is eliminated. Depending on the facility’s situation, the compost can be used on site or sold to others.

Advice for New Composting Operations

What advice would you give someone who is starting up a new composting operation?  Assuming all the permitting and funding are in place, there are still challenges in the running of the site that will have to be dealt with.  For my part, the best advice I would give is to choose the XACT BioReactor technology because it eliminates or minimizes most of the remaining challenges of the composting process such as:

Plus, get the C:N ratio and the moisture right, and in 4 to 7 days, the BioReactor makes great compost!  Because of this, typically, the BioReactor will pay for itself in under 3 years making in one of the best investments in the industry today!  This bit of advice, if taken, will get you started in the right direction.  XACT Systems does more than supply equipment, we support you from the very start to be successful in the business of composting.  Chose wisely my friend.

 

Urban Composting Can Capitalize on the New Trend of Urban Farming

Urban composting with the BioReactor by XACT offers savvy businesses the opportunity to capitalize on the growing trend for local food production better know as Urban Farming.  Let’s talk about this new Local Food Movement and then see how the BioReactor fits into the picture.

A new study from The Ohio State University suggests that most modern cities have the potential to grow up to 100 percent of their current needs for produce and other items.  The study, “Can cities become self-reliant in food?,” conducted by Parwinder Grewal, professor of entomology and director of the Center for Urban Environment and Economic Development at Ohio State University, suggests that a city such as Cleveland, OH, could produce most of the food its citizens need.

The report states that “While not trivial, current local food production only accounts for 1.7 percent ($1.5 million) of the $89 million Cleveland spends annually on fresh produce, and 0.1 percent of the city’s total food and beverage expenditures. However, the potential for food self-reliance is significantly higher considering available space in the city.”

The study determined that Cleveland has more than 3,000 acres of vacant lots that are the result of years of manufacturing job losses, the recent economic downturn and a high rate of home foreclosures. He also found 2,900 acres of flat rooftops.

This study indicates that “the city can prevent economic leakage anywhere from $27 million to $115 million annually by increasing its production of fresh produce, poultry and honey. This could boost the city’s economy and lead to increased job creation.”  In addition, local food production has many other benefits, such as boosting access to and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables; cut obesity rates due to consumption of healthy food and increased physical activity; promote a sense of community and decrease crime activity; and raise property values as vacant lots are put to attractive and productive use.

Urban farming can also reduce human impact on the environment. Professor Grewal said food in the U.S. travels an average of 1,500 miles from the farm to the consumer’s plate, requiring large amounts of fuel and energy for transportation and refrigeration. Additionally, increasing green space in the city through farms and gardens can boost carbon storage in the soil, reduce problems associated with stormwater runoff, and curtail the urban heat island effect.

“Just like the organic food movement, where it was about five to six years ago, the local food movement is gaining a similar type of momentum right now, and every city has the potential to at least increase its local self-sufficiency and resilience by producing its own food.”

This study certainly makes sense, and the BioReactor Mini, such as the 510 or 515  makes it a viable economic and environmental business endeavor.  All the features of the XACT BioReactor scream “Urban”.  From the fast throughput to the quiet operation to the odorless processing there is no better composting system for organic waste conversion.  Couple the BioReactor technology with the staggering food waste produced from schools, restaurants, hospitals, and grocery stores and then utilize the finished compost for Urban Farm–it makes cents (lots of them)!

Compost the Residue From Anaerobic Digester

If you compost the residue from the anaerobic digestion process with XACT’s BioReactor, then you will be extracting all the value from the waste.  After all, isn’t that what we are going for?  The extraction of methane and generation of electricity is great as far as it goes, but there is tremendous value still remaining in the waste from this process.  Taking advantage of this value is easy with the composter by XACT.  The resulting compost is bankable both from a commodity point of view and soil amendment point of view.

Compost made by the BioReactor is high quality therefore demanding a higher price than average.  Or, it replaces sand or sawdust as a bedding material therefore eliminating out-sourced bedding material.  Or, compost reconditions crop fields (with numerous benefits) so that fertilizer costs will be reduced.  So, please consider composting as the final stage of  the anaerobic digester process and reap ALL the benefits.  Leave nothing to waste!
